What is trauma

More than one
bad memory

A trauma is a shock sustained from an overwhelming event that was too unexpected, too shocking or too big to grasp and process. Such a trauma brings with it a tremendous amount of tension that cannot fully discharge immediately.

The nervous system becomes overloaded. And because the tension still seeks an outlet, all kinds of physical and psychological complaints can arise - sometimes years later.

Three primary survival mechanisms
Fighting
Attacking in response to danger
🏃
Flights
Escaping the threat
🦴
Verstarren
Freeze when the others fail

If we have ever been exposed to trauma, these reactions can occur even when there is no real danger. Our body then reacts as if it is still threatened - even though our mind knows it is safe.

How trauma expresses itself

Staying alive
inside your body

Trauma symptoms are not always recognizable as "trauma." They often hide behind everyday complaints and patterns.

😵

Sustained vigilance - always being "on", difficulty relaxing, sleep problems

💨

Dissociation - feeling beside yourself, not feeling your body, experiencing the world as unreal

💦

Emotional reactivity - Reacting violently to small stimuli that don't seem to affect others

😥

Constant voltage - muscle pain, headaches, abdominal discomfort with no apparent cause

💔

Difficulties in relationships - closeness is difficult, boundaries feel uncertain, building trust takes a lot

🔀

Recurring patterns - the same situations and relationships repeating themselves, as if you can't figure it out

The approach

Step by step,
at your pace

Body-centered trauma healing focuses not so much on the trauma itself, but on the effects of it on your body. You don't have to relive the trauma or talk about it again.

"With small steps, at your own pace, the tension in your body starts to discharge. This reduces the impact of the trauma to manageable proportions and the symptoms gradually diminish."
1
Getting in touch with the body

We track what happens in your body as you gently recall the experience - muscle tension, breathing, heart rate, tingling.

2
Activating resources

We look for what already supports you - inner and outer. By activating resources, we create a safe anchor from which you can meet the tension.

3
Voltage discharge

In small, achievable steps, you release stored energy. The nervous system restores its self-regulating ability. You come out of survival mode.

4
Integration

What is liberated is allowed to land. Rest, grounding and insight conclude each session - so that the work finds its place even after the session.

Resources

What you already
inside you

An important part of trauma healing is discovering and activating your own resources. These exist both within and around you.

Internal resources
  • Creativity
  • Humor
  • Intelligence
  • Courage
  • Curiosity
  • Resilience
External resources
  • Positive memories
  • Support from friends
  • Pets
  • Fine places
  • Nature and movement
  • Music or art

Somewhere in your body there is always a place of rest - from which you can relax yourself and break the vicious cycle. We search for that place together.

🔎 Did you know?

Trauma healing works even if you don't know exactly what trauma is underlying your symptoms. The body knows - and the body heals.

Different forms

Trauma is
not one thing

There are many forms of trauma, each with its own impact on the nervous system and body. Tuur counsels people with a variety of traumatic experiences.

Shock trauma (type I)

A one-time, acute overwhelming event: an accident, loss, violence, medical procedure or other sudden shock.

🔀
Developmental trauma (type II)

Repeated or prolonged experiences of insecurity in early childhood: neglect, inconsistent care, emotional or physical abuse.

👪
Relational trauma

Damage sustained in close relationships - betrayal, abandonment, abuse. Affects the ability to safely connect with others.

🌞
Early childhood trauma

Experiences before the fourth year of life that had no language but are stored in the body and nervous system.

🌎
Collective & transgenerational

Trauma that is passed down through families or communities - war, migration, grief - and carries over into subsequent generations.

👣
Identity Trauma

Damage done by suppressing who you are - orientation, gender, identity - by environment, culture or religion.

For whom

Do you recognize
This in yourself?

Trauma healing is for anyone who is stuck and suspects that the past is still working through in the present - even if you don't know exactly what happened.

You are always "on" and have difficulty really relaxing
You react violently to situations that seem to affect others less
You feel detached from your body or the world around you
You get stuck in the same relationship or behavior patterns
You have physical complaints with no obvious medical cause
You want to break free from the burden of the past but don't know how
You don't have to relive the trauma again in order to heal
What trauma healing brings

After the
healing process

More life energy released - less energy toward survival
You feel more connected - to yourself and to others
Your nervous system calms down - being more calm, less reactive
Stored pain releases - even pain you didn't consciously remember
You regain resilience - the ability to move with life
You get closer to yourself - your essence, your core

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you want
know?

Should I relive the trauma? +
No. Body-centered trauma healing works through the body - not the story. You don't have to relive the trauma or talk about it at length. We follow what is happening in your body, at your pace.
What if I don't know exactly what my trauma is? +
That's not a problem at all. Trauma healing works even if you don't know exactly what happened. The body carries the memory - and the body heals. We start with what you feel now, not with what you remember.
How long does a trajectory take? +
This varies from person to person. Some feel a noticeable shift after only a few sessions. Deeper or early childhood traumas require more time. There is no obligation - we look together to see what you need.
Can I also do trauma healing online? +
Yes. Much of the body-centered work is also readily available online via video call. For more intensive sessions, a face-to-face appointment in Racour may be desirable. We will discuss together what is best for you.
How is it different from EMDR or cognitive therapy? +
EMDR works through eye movements to reprocess memories. Cognitive therapy works through thoughts and beliefs. Body-based trauma healing goes directly to the body - where the tension is stored. The approaches sometimes complement each other. Tuur always considers what makes the most sense for you.
Is trauma healing appropriate for childhood trauma? +
Yes, this is exactly where the body-centered approach is strong. Early childhood trauma often has no language - it was stored before the child could talk. By working through the body, we reach these layers in a safe, gentle way.
Safety first
You always determine
the pace

Trauma healing requires a safe therapeutic relationship. Nothing is mandatory. You never take a step beyond what you can handle - it's your process, your pace.
