Embrace the wounded child within yourself

A while ago, something happened that immediately made me feel a sense of disappointment and anger welling up inside me. Because this feeling was so strong, I decided to stay with it and carry it into the night. I just couldn’t fall asleep. I lay there tossing and turning in bed. Eventually, I did fall asleep and had a vivid dream. When I woke up the next morning, that feeling was still lingering.

Synchronicity

Quite “coincidentally,” a friend sent me a WhatsApp message that day saying he’d like to explore the topic of loneliness together with some therapist friends. This immediately struck a chord with me. I replied as follows:

“[…] The theme of loneliness really resonates with me. […] I find myself falling into disappointment and a feeling of rejection or of not being good enough. It’s an old pattern. And I realize this feels very lonely, too. I think exploring this sense of emptiness and loneliness would be very valuable. I now see the image of a little boy in front of me who feels misunderstood and lonely, crawling away into a corner to make himself as small and invisible as possible. ? Today, I’m going to take some time to connect with that little boy so that, hopefully, he’ll feel a little less lonely. ??”

Old pain and negative beliefs

So I realized that the feelings of disappointment and anger that were triggered touched on an old pain. Linked to this was the persistent negative belief, “I’m not good enough.” And also the survival mechanism of isolating myself, making myself small, and becoming invisible—which causes loneliness and being alone to rear their heads. But back then, as a child, I’d rather have that and not be there than feel the pain of rejection because it was too great and overwhelming.

Inner dialogue

When I took a moment after breakfast to connect with my wounded inner child through an inner dialogue, it soon became clear that his only desire is to be understood, heard, seen, and accepted just as he is—to feel and receive the love he has all too often missed out on. I noticed that, as an adult, this touched me deeply. I could feel his pain and his sense of loss. And I also realized that, from my adult perspective, I now want to be there for him completely. He is a part of me. I hear him, I see him, I feel him, I accept him completely. My love for him is unconditional. No strings attached. With that message and the promise to reach out to him more often, I was finally able to embrace him.

Recovery

Healing only comes about by bringing those deep pains and old wounds to the surface—by bringing to light the dark sides of our soul that we may not want to face. Darkness cannot exist in the light. And if we leave those old wounds and traumas unexamined, they will still unconsciously control us. Those survival mechanisms and negative beliefs are so deeply ingrained in us that, without even realizing it, we live according to those old patterns, thereby severely limiting ourselves instead of living our lives to the fullest.

Of course, this isn’t without risk and investment, because it takes a lot to dare to let go of your old identity and develop a new one. You can compare it to a house built on shaky, unstable foundations (the negative beliefs and coping mechanisms). At some point, cracks will start to appear. And while you can repair those cracks over and over again, they’ll keep coming back. And the house might even collapse, either partially or completely. What remains is clearing away the rubble and building new, solid foundations based on your positive beliefs and natural qualities. And so, brick by brick, you build a new house. Coming home to yourself—both literally and figuratively!

How do you do this?

Via inner child worktrauma healing and also family constellations you can bring those neglected parts of yourself to the surface, allowing healing to take place. You’re welcome to visit me at my practice for this. Welcome to a free introductory meeting.
